Our first ever free campsite was amazing! We decided to do some night driving that day, and we rolled up to the picnic area on the Pecos River around 11:30 p.m.
It was dark and we couldn’t see much, so we were very pleasantly surprised in the morning when we opened the door to this view!

There is a large loop at the end of the road, where the picnic tables are. That is where we parked, as did one semi truck, and 2 other RVs the night we stayed.
This was a very convenient stop for us, as we were already driving on US-90, and it is only .6 miles from the road. Just turn in at the sign that says picnic area, and follow the road all the way to the end, where it loops back.
We liked this free campsite because it was a great stopping point after we left Choke Canyon State Park, on our way to Big Bend National Park.
Also, the view can’t be beat!
An added bonus for this spot are the covered picnic tables, grills, and garbage cans.
The only negative thing about this free campsite, is that there are no restrooms.
With plenty of room to park, finding a spot was not an issue. We spent the next morning eating breakfast outside and walking around. It was a little chilly when we woke up, but it warmed up nicely for a December day.
We highly recommend this free campsite and plan on making a stop here anytime we are passing through.
